IMPORTANT APHA – Brucella Canis testing update – 6th October 2025

On 6th October 2025, we received news from the UK Government, announcing that rescues must now test any dog entering Great Britain from Romania, for Brucella Canis. They let us know on 6th October, and the decision became effective not even 12 hours after the announcement, on 7th October 2025.

We already test our dogs for BC – however, it has now been announced that the UK would like to conduct their own testing, and thus, the dogs can only leave Romania once our vet has sent their blood samples off to be tested in the APHA UK laboratory, and the results have returned as negative on the two tests required. This in itself can take around 2 weeks, or more.

Entry to the UK must take place within 30 days of the blood being drawn. This gives us no wiggle room for postal delays, APHA delays, or transport delays. Sadly, we feel that Romanian rescue dogs are not wanted in the UK anymore. We are trying our best to adhere to these new timescales for those wonderful folks who do still want to help the poor dogs of Romania.

We are in support of necessary testing for BC and other illnesses, but these unrealistic timescales make it apparent that they are just trying to put a stop to Romanian dogs entering the UK. We sadly already know of 3 rescues closing their doors for this reason. It is a devastating time, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through this. We will keep trying. We have to, for the dogs.

For now, we continue as normal… Saving one animal at a time.

September 2025

UK Team visits Romania; For a few days in September 2025, our UK team visited our shelter in Romania again. As always, a lovely but harrowing experience. This time, almost the whole team managed to get together. We got lots done in a few short days – we rescued, we brought aid, gave medication and food to strays we aren’t yet able to take in, and visited both shelters we support, as well as our vet clinic.

The shelters are full, and with so many loving dogs and cats just waiting for their forever homes, it’s really tough right now. The kill shelters are overrun with dogs, the streets are full of sick and injured strays needing our help. If you’d be able to adopt any of our animals, please send us a message for more information. If you can’t adopt but would like to support our animals, please consider donating, or even sharing our social media posts. It helps so much – you never know who may see a post you’ve shared!

Late 2024 / Early 2025

Seeking help; The kennels we support in Romania are finally emptying slowly though we are still over capacity. Our admin team both in the UK and Romania are busy, and we are seeking volunteers to assist us with social media postings, pre adoption calls, post adoption follow ups and fundraising. We have operated with a small team since our inception, and after our last appeal we managed to get a few more wonderful volunteers on board. We could use a few more people however, and would be grateful to hear from you if you could assist in any way!

Homes and space needed; We are desperately seeking kennel space and foster homes in the UK to strengthen the RBU we offer to adopters. If you think you could help us with this huge and important task, please reach out! Even if you could just assist us in seeking out kennels or fosterers on our behalf, we would love to hear from you.

Transport news; Having recently changed transport provider, adopters can now expect shorter wait times to welcome their new family members into their homes. This is a long awaited change and we hope it’ll help make room at the shelter in Romania much faster than in previous years.

Spring 2024

Looking for help; The rescue is still full, and our admin team are so busy. We have operated with a small team since our inception, and have now realised that we could use some help with admin tasks, seeking additional RBU and foster homes. If you think you could help us with anything at all, please reach out! We would love to hear from you.

As usual, our little shelter is full, with so many loving dogs and cats just waiting for their forever homes. In addition, the streets and kill shelters are overrun with dogs and cats needing our help. If you’d be able to adopt any of our animals, please send us a message for more information. If you can’t adopt but would like to support our animals, please consider donating, or even sharing our social media posts. It all helps!

Winter 2023

UK Team visits Romania; In November – December 2023, our UK team visited our shelter in Romania again. As always, a lovely but harrowing experience.

Our little shelter is full, with so many loving dogs and cats just waiting for their forever homes. In addition, the streets and kill shelters are overrun with dogs and cats needing our help. If you’d be able to adopt any of our animals, please send us a message for more information. If you can’t adopt but would like to support our animals, please consider donating, or even sharing our social media posts. It all helps!

August 2023 – Website updates and coming soon.

Website; With plenty of changes going on at the rescue following Brexit and the ever challenging cost of living crisis, our website has taken a bit of a backseat. We are now making updates to the site, and aim to have all dogs and cats available and posted by the middle of the month. In the meantime, we would encourage everyone to visit our Facebook page or our Instagram – both are updated daily! If you have any adoption enquiries, or any questions, please contact us.

Fundraising; There’s no sugar coating it – our rescue has been struggling over the last few months as a result of the cost of living crisis. We will be posting some fundraisers to our social media pages in the coming months and hope we’ll continue to receive your much appreciated support. We’re also very grateful for any fundraising ideas our lovely adopters and supporters have!

Articles and useful information

Brucella testing – informative pages and groups

We have recently been sent the following two Facebook pages which are full of useful information regarding the Brucella testing “requirement”, unnecessarily being imposed by several UK veterinary practices, despite the test NOT being required under UK law. The pages are called “The Good Guide to Romanian Dog Rescue” and “Brucella Canis Former RVN resigned under protest“. Please check them out – both pages contain several interesting and informative posts!

In addition to the groups mentioned above, the following Facebook groups are also filled with support and resources for adopters of foreign rescue dogs;

Brucella Canis Support for Rescue Dog Owners and their Doggies

Brucella Canis information / support group

You will need to request to join both groups, but once you’re in, the resources are invaluable and very important and interesting, too.

As of 2024, we are now routinely testing all dogs for Brucella Canis before they leave Romania. Our veterinary practice in Romania completes an in house test, and provide results. However, for adopters whose UK veterinary practice requires a UK certified test, we can arrange this for an additional fee.

The Romanian Stray Dog Business

A very informative article written by our very own Tiffany Mitchell in December 2018 about the situation stray dogs in Romania are facing. Unfortunately, nothing has changed since then and the stray population continues to grow. With no end in sight, we will continue our work to help rehabilitate and re-home as many strays as we possibly can.
